HFH - Hereditary Footpad Hyperkeratosis

Recent findings by a collaboration of investigators in Europe, primarily at the University of Bern, have identified a mutation that causes HFH - Hereditary Footpad Hyperkeratosis in multiple breeds. The condition is inherited as a simple recessive trait with animals testing a clear, carrier, or affected. Only those animals with two copies of the mutation will exhibit the characteristic thickening of the footpad, usually by the age of six months. Footpads in these animals are prone to cracking and fissures which may lead to pain and secondary infection.
