Of major significance to Arab and Arab cross owners is our exclusive test to determine the absence or presence of the mutation that causes Severe Combined Immunodeficiency – SCID. This fairly common defect in Arabs can result in the birth of affected foals. The disease is always fatal since the foal is born with no immune system.
VetGen has also obtained licensing to offer the recently developed test to determine the absence or presence of the mutation that causes Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency – GBED. This defect in the Quarter Horse and Paints can result in the birth of affected foals. This disease, also, is always fatal since the foal is born with weakness affecting the heart and skeletal muscles.
